Westport Special Olympics Club
Westport Special Olympics Club run our primary activities on a weekly basis in Westport Leisure Park.
Swimming takes place in the 25m swimming pool at Westport Leisure Park every Tuesday evening from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
Each week the athletes train for one hour to improve their stroke technique and swimming endurance in a range of strokes under the guidance of Westport Swimming Club coach Barry Robinson.
Some of our athletes who completed the Swim Ireland 'Swim for a Mile' programme are pictured above.
Bocce is a sport similar to bowls, and is pronounced ‘botch-ay’.
Originating in Italy Bocce is now played all over Europe, and in several countries worldwide with Italian communities.
A game of Bocce is played between two players, or between two teams of players, each with 2 to 4 members per team.
Both red and green balls are used in the game and the colours are chosen before the game commences via a coin toss.
The game is scored by players bowling their ball as close as possible to a smaller ball called the "jack" or "pallina".
The player or team bowling a ball or balls closest to the pallina are awarded points for each scoring ball.
The sport develops touch and tactical awareness while providing gentle exercise in an extremely sociable environment.
Westport Special Olympics Club Bocce takes place every Wednesday in the Auditorium at Westport Leisure Park.
Activity Times:
Swimming: Tuesdays 18:30 - 19:30
Bocce: Wednesdays 16:00 - 18:00
Westport Special Olympics Club always welcome new members and would be glad to hear from anybody interested in participating in our activities, or anybody interested in volunteering to assist with our activities.
